Wondering How to Make Cannabis Gummies? It’s Easy!

Sometimes you want the DIY cannabis experience. Rather than go to the dispensary and pick out pre-made edibles, you can experiment and make some yourself for a fun project. While it may seem complicated to make homemade (and tasty) edibles, the steps for how to make cannabis gummies are quite simple. If this is your first time making an infused treat, we think you’ll find this recipe to be fun and easy.

Wondering How to Make Cannabis Gummies? It’s Easy!

January 19, 2021

Cannabis gummies are a popular choice because they taste good and are rather discreet. Plus, they’re a smoke-free option that still gets you high. One benefit of making your own cannabis gummies is that you can make adjustments wherever you see fit. They’re versatile and can be tweaked to suit your lifestyle.

For example, some people like to make a mix of CBD/THC gummies at their favorite ratio, while others like to make extremely potent gummies that will have them zonked for hours. This recipe is so versatile you can make an entirely non-intoxicating batch of gummies or make the most potent, THC-laden candies you’ve ever had.

What you’ll need to make cannabis gummies

Before you get started making cannabis gummies, be sure to gather your ingredients. The most important thing for this recipe is infused coconut oil. The oil can be infused with THC, CBD, or a mixture of the two.

Don’t have infused coconut oil? Don’t worry. You can follow our cannabis coconut oil recipe here to prepare your own. Be sure to set aside a few hours to take care of the coconut oil if you don’t have any prepared before making the gummies.

If you don’t want to go through the work of making your own infused cannabis coconut oil, all is not lost. Scroll below to see our alternative gummy recipe using a cannabis or CBD tincture.

Our recipe is adapted from this recipe. Feel free to make adjustments where you see fit.

Cannabis gummies ingredients:

  • ½ cup cannabis coconut oil
  • ½ cup your choice of fruit juice
  • One 85-gram Jello pack, flavored (or equivalent flavored gelatin packet)
  • 2 tbsp plain gelatin (for a vegan alternative replace with agar agar)
  • Optional: ½ tsp sunflower or soy lecithin

Cannabis gummies supplies:

  • Stove
  • Whisk
  • Saucepan
  • Your preferred gummy mold shape
  • Dropper
  • Refrigerator or freezer

How to make cannabis gummies step-by-step

Ready to get started? Here are the steps to make cannabis gummies:

  1. Add fruit juice, infused coconut oil, and your choice of lecithin (if using) to a saucepan and bring to low heat over the stove.
  2. Stir continuously until the mixture has melted.
  3. Add the flavored gelatin and unflavored gelatin to the melted mixture, continuing to stir.
  4. Whisk the mixture on low heat for another 10 minutes until all of the gelatin has dissolved. Be sure to continuously whisk during this part.
  5. Once the ingredients are smooth and well-combined, quickly start to fill your dropper with the mixture and fill the molds. Continue to whisk while filling each mold to prevent the mixture from hardening. (This step is easiest done with two participants, but we believe you can do it by yourself if that’s the only option)
  6. Place the filled molds into your freezer for 20-25 minutes, or in your refrigerator for 2-4 hours.
  7. Enjoy!

Again, this recipe is super versatile. You can select your favorite fruit juice to add, or simply add water if you don’t have any on hand. We strongly recommend opting for fruit juice though, as it does a good job of covering up more of the cannabis flavor that comes with the territory. Of course, you’ll want to choose a fruit juice that pairs well with the flavored gelatin you choose.

Additionally, you can add one teaspoon of citric acid to the recipe to make the gummies sour. This will also serve as a preservative to keep them stable for longer.

It’s very important that you thoroughly whisk the mixture the entire time you spend making it. The more you whisk, the less likely it is you will deal with separation issues once they solidify. And if the gummies feel a little bit sticky post-cooling, you can roll them in confectioner’s sugar to reduce the stickiness.

Another important note is to never bring the mixture to a boil. We recommend you stick to low heat throughout the process, bringing it to medium only for a few moments if you need to get the heat circulating. If you bring the mixture to high heat, you run the risk of burning off the active compounds and losing potency.

The number of gummies produced will vary based on the size of your molds. The potency of your edibles will also vary depending on what ratio of coconut oil to cannabis you used. Be sure to start with a low potency if you are not an edible eating pro.

You can always eat more gummies to get more high. It’s a lot harder to undo the act of eating too many gummy bears from the start.

An alternative method using tinctures

Don’t want to make your own cannabis coconut oil? If you don’t want to make a day of preparation, there is an easy hack. We’ll tell you how to make cannabis gummies with a simple tincture instead.

Simply follow the recipe above, replacing the cannabis-infused coconut oil with traditional coconut oil. Proceed to drop in as much cannabis tincture as you want, making sure to continuously whisk and to not let it get too hot.

The benefit is that you don’t have to go through the process of decarboxylating cannabis, infusing oil, and storing it. You can simply pick a tincture you enjoy and add as much as you like.

You can choose between a variety of tinctures at any of our Washington dispensary locations from our Bellingham pot shop to our Spokane dispensary. We have a selection of THC, CBD, and combination tinctures for a variety of purposes.

Final thoughts

Cannabis and CBD gummies are a fun and tasty way to get your dose without smoking or vaping. Plus, you can change them up each time you make them and experiment with a variety of flavors.

Have an idea of how strong you want the edibles to be before you begin. And when in doubt, do not add more. That is unless you are a seasoned pro and can handle a case of getting too high.

Remember that edibles hit differently than smoking, vaping, and other methods of consumption. They tend to take effect anywhere from 30 minutes to two hours after consumption. This leaves a lot of room to eat too many thinking you aren’t getting strong effects.

If you’re unsure if you ate enough, wait at least 30 minutes and see how you feel. If you decide to eat more, stick to one or two more gummies and proceed to wait another 30 minutes or so.

Not only do the effects take a while to come on with edibles, but they also last a lot longer than other methods. You may get really high smoking a joint and remain high for a couple of hours, but with edibles, the high will last several hours longer. Be prepared to feel different for anywhere from four to eight hours.
